Understanding the Different Chihuahua Breeds Available

If you have already decided that a Chihuahua is the perfect dog for you; it’s time to narrow your choice down to the perfect breed. There are several choices out there, even though a lot of people believe there are only 2 types. However, the American Kennel Club recognizes Chihuahua types, because terms like “teacup,” “toy,” or “apple head” are not actual breeds. These are just marketing tools that are used to entice the potential owner.

The AKC only recognizes Longhaired and Short-haired Chihuahuas. The rest of the names are a way to describe the dog; at least as far as the American Kennel Club is concerned.

No matter which type you decide upon, they are both small animals and the smallest when it comes to various dog breeds. Outside of the length their hair is there isn’t really a lot of differences between them. They both weigh about 6lbs. or less and get to be about 6 to 9 inches in height. The first time you see them poke their little heads out of a bag you will see why women love to carry them around.

You will find that both breeds also have the same behavior tendencies. These are sensitive dogs that become extremely attached to their owners. If a stranger gets too close they will quickly become jealous and let you know about it. The same holds true for strange dogs as well. Sometimes this is a problem since the Chihuahua is so tiny.

What it comes down to is there isn’t anything that will make your decision any easier between long and short-haired pups. They will both be protective around the home, let you know when newcomers are coming onto the property, and they still need the same type of nutrition and exercise. Some will be short-tempered at time, seem a little nervous, or even be constantly happy. This really depends on the family line and the type of parents that bring them into the world. If you purchase pups then it’s a good idea to socialize them at a young age. This way they will be friendly and sweet to everyone.

In the end it really comes down to personal preference. We recommend researching their characteristics and temperaments of the breed. This is how you come across their health factors and learn to avoid any potential issues down the road. Oh, and if you want to save a few bucks throughout their life time; a long-haired Chihuahua will need more grooming as opposed to a short-haired version.
