Shorthaired or Longhaired Chihuahuas

Before you purchase a particular dog, you should conduct  a research to find out something about it first.  When you do this you will become familiar with its appearance, personality, temperament and any medical conditions that might be prevalent.  In relation to the Longhaired Chihuahua, this logic also applies.  There are a few things that you should be aware of if you are trying to make a decision about purchasing a longhaired or shorthaired Chihuahua.

When it comes to the various types of dogs, the Chihuahua has the reputation of being the smallest one of them all.  As a result of television, commercials and famous people, this particular type of dog has turned into a very popular breed.  The Chihuahua‘s origin is in Mexico and is said to be the one dog that has the longest life expectancy of more than eighteen years.  This particular dog’s ancestors go all the back to the Aztecs, whose royalty raised them as household pets.  Obviously, researching the  history of these tiny dogs  will indicate that it is somewhat fuzzy and not agreed upon by most people.

The longhaired Chihuahua possesses a very smooth undercoat with a long overcoat that looks a lot like human hair.  This makes them perfect if you are someone who always has the misfortune of dealing with allergies.  The longhaired Chihuahua is often confused with the Pomeranian, but the two dogs are not anywhere near the same, as the American Kennel Club will advise.  Both the long and shorthaired breeds are acknowledged by the AKC.

In relation to being very loved and loyal, the Chihuahua is most definitely at the top of the list.  It is tiny, alert, attentive and quite amusing at times.  Usually, the Chihuahua does better with adults than children, but this can be changed if the dog becomes familiar with the children at a young age.  Obviously, you must make sure that the children realize even though it is tiny and adorable, it is a living animal that can be harmed and can bite. When it comes to having a temper, there are no differences between the longhaired breed and the shorthaired one.

The only known difference is the length of the fur.  If you are able to keep the fur groomed in the right manner, there is not a good reason for not selecting the longhaired Chihuahua.

This type of dog can be an excellent choice for a pet if you can give it the things that it needs, like warmth.  As a result of their small size, they are susceptible to the cold and if they have long or short hair, they must be kept warm so that they do not become chilled.  Research the dog and then decide for yourself.  Just like with most dogs, buying a puppy is not recommended if you are not capable of providing it with everything that it requires to live a content and healthy life.
