How often should I expect my chihuahua to eat?

We recently bought a chihuahua, she seems perfectly healthy and spunky. But, she rarely eats, we bought her special food for small dogs and she barely eats it. I figure it's because she's so small that only a few bites would fill her? Anyone have a chihuahua and can tell me what's normal and whats not?

Many dogs eat only once a day. If she only has a few bites here and there throughout the day, you're making her feel empowered that she can eat whenever she wants. Try a few different kinds of food to see what she likes, then start leaving the bowl with food out only in the morning. Ring a bell when you put the food out. If she doesn't eat, or eats a little, then put it away.

You're in charge, and by choosing when she eats she will learn to be a better dog to you. After a few days, she will realize that ringing the bell means that's the only time she gets to eat today, so she better eat as much as she wants then. This will make both you and your dog happy. Good luck!

The Chihuahua is know by no other name and has been popular north and south of the Rio Grande for many years. It is the oldest purebred canine native to the North American continent.

The Chihuahua's origin is filled with tales and extends back to the Toltec civilization of Mexico in the ninth century. Discovery of the earliest Chihuahuas were in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Ancestors of the Chihuahua could include a small hairless Chinese dog, which could account for the size reduction of the original Chihuahua. The ancient people in Mexico first developed a prairie dog or gopher, which was mute, longhaired and larger than the present-day Chihuahua.

Tales are many about the uses of this tiny dog in Toltec and later Aztec religious rites. Nearly all Chihuahua fanciers accept one fact: This is that the modern Chihuahua that was discovered in Chihuahua, Mexico, in the mid-1800s stands apart from all other canines. This tiny breed prefers its own kind to all other dogs. The Chihuahua can be sociable with other dogs, but most definitely still is more content when surrounded by other Chihuahuas. Because of this fact it probably is not a good idea to own other pets if you desire to own a Chihuahua. Your household will be better of with multiple Chihuahuas if that is your chosen breed.

The Chihuahua has no claims of ties to royalty and any hunting abilities or heritage. The Chihuahua is known primarily as a wonderful little social able human companion and that is the main purpose of the Chihuahua today and in time past. The Chihuahua is quite content to have no work assigned to it. He fits nicely even in the smallest spaces and is content to spend his days lying in the sun or being pampered by its humans. The Chihuahua makes a perfect pocket pal and can travel with you just about anywhere almost invisible to strangers. The Chihuahua is not a big eater; therefore, food expense for the Chihuahua is quite minimal. He actually requires no kind of special care beyond a warm place to sleep and his treasured humans.

Chihuahua is usually most comfortable with senior adults and other adult families. They do not fit well into homes with preschoolers, toddlers or young adolescents. Preschoolers may try to grab at the Chihuahua, toddlers are likely to step on it or fall over it and young adolescents in their busy rush of a day may injure it.

Personality

The Chihuahua will usually claim ownership of one family member with whom it bonds tightly. He is brave, loyal, affectionate and intelligent that can be highly sensitive and stubborn. He does not do well walking on a leash and being taken for long walks. It is just easier to pick up the Chihuahua and carry him on your walk rather than have him in a collar and on a leash. They are mostly house companions and adornments. Some are able to learn tricks and may even enjoy performing for guests.

Appearance

The Chihuahua has no height standard but usually stands about 5 inches tall and weighs no more than 6 pounds. Its skull is described as an apple dome shape, with or without a spot spot. Its muzzle is short and pointed. The Chihuahua is shown in smooth- and longhaired varieties. The smooth variety's coat should be soft, glossy and close. The longhaired variety coat has a soft texture withor without waves or curls, its ears are edged with fringes, and its tail, feet, legs and neck are well feathered. Colors are any color or combination of colrs, solid, marked, or splashed.

Grooming

You will need a cushioned bristle brush and a medium-toothed comb for both the smooth coat and long haired varieties. The long haired Chihuahua is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. The short haired coat also benefits from weekly brushings. You can use a chamois cloth to bring the coat up to a shine in the short haired Chihuhua.

How do I tell if my chihuahua is pregnant?

My almost 2 year old chihuahua came into heat over 2 weeks ago. She finally got stuck to a male chihuahua last Wednesday and then got stuck together about 4 times a day from Wednesday til Sunday. What are the possibilites that she got pregnant? How will I be able to tell? Thank you so much for any help!
My chihuahua was free. My mother in law breeds them and gave me her (pick of the liter). We aren't selling our chihuahua puppies. We are giving one of them to one of our friends and if she has another, we will find someone who wants one or keep the other. I don't really expect ours to have but one or maybe 2 because she is so small.

We were only breeding her this one time and having her fixed after she has the puppies to lessen the chance for breast cancer (per our vet).

She may ask you to got to the store for unusual items such as pickles and ice cream.

What is the oldest age a chihuahua can be breed at safely?

I have a 4yr old chihuahua,female and wish to breed her with a smaller male chihuahua.At what age is it safe to breed and the pros and cons of breeding?

If you knew what you were doing it would be fine once the female is fully health, temperament and structurally evaluated and she is knowledgeably ascertained to have qualities that would be beneficial to the future of her breed for you to locate the best possible stud that would complement her and you used sound breeding strategies to insure that you would produce puppies that would be a benefit to the breed and sought after by knowledgeable people… but since your question sort of is a clue that you don't know what you are doing, I would think it would be wise to spay her, so as to prevent her from even higher chances of mammary cancers and other health problems, and love her for who she is — your beloved pet - instead of trying to exploit her uterus for some personal gain or gratification.

If you wish to become a responsible breeder of Chihuahuas, please, after spaying her, take her and work with her in some performance venue and title her so that you learn about trainability, health, structural soundness and temperament in the breed — find a knowledgeable mentor in the breed that is a responsible breeder and learn everything you can from them - then locate the line of dogs that best suits your ideal of the Chihuahua within the standard of the breed and take her into the conformation ring and learn about structure, temperament, etc., then if the female you got then is a suitable potential producer for the betterment of the breed, you can locate an appropriate stud and possibly breed - again, with your mentor's input regarding the breeding and proper rearing of the pups. So basically, five or six years from now you might be ready but the odds are the female you have now will never be appropriate and again, why exploit her to just make more unwanted puppies for selfish reasons? Good luck…

add: A very common misconception is that a vet would in any way know if a dog was a suitable representative of a breed and breed quality - they do not in any way know this. The only time a vet would know is if they themselves are responsible breeders of that breed and that is rare, very rare so taking them to the vet for assessment as to breed quality is inappropriate. Most vets do not even know the breed specific health testing required for most breed so that is something you would learn from a knowledgeable mentor in the particular breed.

The Chihuahua is considered the smallest dog in the world. She is smart, and an excellent choice for an apartment. She may not be good with very young children as she is fragile. She is a great companion and is generally happy to live with other pets. She is a very good watch dog.

*Good With Children? Yes, she is good with older, gentle, behaved children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? Yes, she is good with other pets.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Chihuahua is 6 to 9 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 2 to 6 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chihuahua is no exception. Be on the look out for corneal dryness, dislocating kneecaps and collapsing trachea. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. *Grooming. The Chihuahua has two coat varieties, short/smooth and long/soft. She should be brushed regularly. Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.
*Life Span. The Chihuahua can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*Chihuahua History. The Chihuahua has a clouded origin, some saying that they are from the Aztecs, some Egyptian and some say they are from Mexican Toltecs. The modern discovery of this breed was in Mexico about 100 years ago. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1904.

How much more care does a chihuahua puppy require than an adult?

I'm planning on adopting a chihuahua soon and she will be able to come home with me in February. I will be going to school three days a week for a few hours. I understand that a chihuahua is okay for a few hours on it's own, but is it any different when it is a puppy of 12 weeks? Will there have to be someone there with it ALL the time until it is older or will it be okay? Also if anyone has any experiences with raising a puppy i would appreciate advice. Thanks!
I really appreciate the advice i'm getting, but if anyone could i'd appreciate more on the main question. Would a young puppy of 12 weeks be able to be alone while i'm at school? I've heard they need to be taken out to pee almost every hour.

hello! Great choice of dogs! As you can tell from my name I am a big Chihuahua fan. I have been raising them for over 8 yrs. The main thing with a chihuahua is to make sure they don't get low blood sugar(hypoglycemia). The best way to prevent this is to free feed them, leave their food out in front of them all day. They eat small meals, but eat often..They are fine if left for a few hours a day, just like any dog. They are very fragile. You have to watch where you walk, sit, or lay down. They like to climb too and can easily hurt a leg by faloling off the back of a chair or couch, or out of your arms. It is best to leave them in an x-pen while you are at school.
