It takes years to be properly prepared and you are not even close to being prepared, if you don’t know the answer to a simple question like how long is a female chihuahua pregnant. A Chihuahua is pregnant normally around 63 days, give or take a couple of days either way. If you don’t know exactly what you are doing, your Chihuahua can die trying to whelp (deliver) her puppies. Sometimes the puppies are too big for the mom to whelp by herself, sometimes the puppies come out breech (back legs first) and sometimes the puppy gets stuck. If that happens, she will need a C-Section in order to save her life and her puppies lives. If you don’t have experience (your case) and your dog does have complications, you will not know how to spot complications or when it’s critical to get your dog to the vet. When you do get your Chihuahua, since you say you might get a female Chihuahua and you really love her and want to have her around for a long time, then you will make and appointment to have her Spayed. She will be a much happier and a much healthier Chihuahua in the long run.

I had a female chihuahua that had a litter 2 years ago. She was pregnant for roughly 59 days. However there is no guarantee, it usually depends on how many puppies she’s got in there.

Little advice- it’s important you are around on the delivery day, so look for signs that she is ready. Mine acted very strange, scratching and biting blankets to make a ‘delivery area.’ She will do most of the work herself, but you may need to help by pulling a puppy out. Good luck! Oh and by the way my chihuahua definately did NOT need a c section. Its not necessary for all small breeds.

You need to get your dog to the vet asap. Your dog can die because of your ignorance. This breed is often a C-section breed. Your vet can advise you on your options and help you propare IF that is your choice to risk your dog's life.

Take your dog to the vet and have her spayed. If you don’t even know the gestation period of dogs you certainly don’t know enough to be breeding dogs.

You should also know that many Chi’s and other tiny dogs need C sections as they are unable to whelp naturally. Before you give any further thought to breeding your pet quality dog, make sure you have $2000 set aside to pay for a C section and another $1000 set aside for vet care for the dam and any live puppies.

The pounds and shelters are fully of badly bred Chihuahuas, thanks to back yard breeders breeding their non breedworthy pets.

You can have your female"tested" by your veterinarian at about day 30 – 32. The experienced vet can feel the tiny fetuses by gently palpitating the female, but only during this narrow window of time. It is suggested that the layperson not try this palpitation for fear of harming the fetuses. Of course you can also use ultrasound to see if femaleis pregnant, but the cost is rather high.

Now you must prepare for the arrival of the puppies:

You must know what to feed your female and what not to feed her.
You must prepare a safe whelping box. Temperature is crucial for newborn puppies!
You need a notebook for recording your female’s temperature twice a day from about day 58 onward.
Morning temperature differs a bit from evening temperature but when you see that temperature plunge from her normal (of about 101 F.) to close to 98 F. degrees, you know that the puppies will be whelped within 24 hours. You need scales for measuring the weight of your puppies twice a day and recording them.
What if the puppies are born and your bitch cannot or will not nurse them?
You need to have a milk substitute on hand before the whelping, just in case, and the means of administering the warmed food, by dropper or 5 cc syringe (no needle!) or by tube (for experienced breeders only). Cows milk is not good. Goats milk is digestible, but prepared, balanced puppy formula in tin cans is best, obtainable from large pet supermarkets.
You must know how to look after your bitch after the whelping. What dangers to be aware of, what to feed her and how much, and what supplements to feed her.

There are many more things to be aware of and so it is in your best interest to get a good book on this subject.
Fortunately, there are several available and not too expensive nor is the material too complex for the beginner. We urge all those who are breeding dogs to have a good reference book available at all times.

Approximately 63 days. There’s a lot more you need to know other than how long she’ll be pregnant, btw. Start researching. Or just call your vet and book an emergency spay. Obviously you have no idea what you’re doing… so spaying her would be the most sensible thing to do.

So much could happen outside I don't think it's a good thing at all. You can easily fix the way he smells but he could get diseases from being outside. For example, ringworm is carried through mud and humans can get it. Thus, take him to pet-smart or something regularly but I don't recommend him sleeping outside.

Please keep your dog inside. If he has a bad doggie smell then it can help if you brush him daily (outside) and feed him a high quality (no corn!) food (true Wellness or Blue Buffalo). If that doesn’t help then you can give him a monthly bath (use high quality shampoo made for dogs to avoid drying his skin out). In addition, you can brush his teeth weekly and that *will* avoid extremely bad doggie breathe from cavities as he gets older.

Really, because he smells bad is no reason to kick him outside. Dogs who live outside all of the time are bored and lonely and develop bad habits like chewing on fences, digging, and barking.

If you do have a secure cage with a water container, shade, and protection from rain then I would say he is old enough to sleep outside. HOWEVER if he isn’t used to the heat it could be too much for him at first so I would slowly build him up to it. Also, because he is a Chihuahua, he will probably NOT be able to sleep outside during winter unless you live in a very warm climate.
