If you are vegetarian but love making your own dog food, it can seem challenging since there’s never meat in the house. The good news is that there are hundreds of meatless dog food recipes available, and I’m going to go through 3 easy ones. The bad news (kind of) is that dogs aren’t herbivores; they need to have meat in their diet in order to remain healthy. Replacing animal protein with other protein sources is OK a few times a week, but they do need meat several times a week as well. Now that we’ve dispensed with the disclaimer, on to the recipes!
With most dog food recipes the ratio to keep in mind is 1 part cooked meat, 1 part raw vegetable, and 1 part cooked whole wheat or starch. With a meatless dog food recipe, the ratio obviously has to change a little bit. The ratio that we want to keep in mind now is 1 part cooked beans, 1 part raw vegetable, and.5 part cooked starch (because the beans are starches as well).
Knowing this ratio makes it very easy to create your own meatless dog food recipes, but I’ll go through a few that I like.
1. 1 can cooked black beans (rinsed), 2 celery stalks, 8 oz. cooked pasta
2. 1 cup cooked quinoa, .5 cup cooked couscous, 2 raw carrots
3. 1 can red beans, .5 cup cooked rice, .5 cups raw carrots
Now I know that you’re wondering what to do with those lists, right? Easy; once you have assembled all of your ingredients, simply combine them in your food processor. Pulse until it’s the consistency of wet sand, and then decide if you want wet food or dry food.
If your pup prefers wet food, simply freeze as-is and microwave with a little water at feeding time. Since it’s warmed up, your dog will think that they’re getting a special treat!
On the other hand, if your pup tends to like dry food, simply roll the ‘wet sand’ into small balls and bake in the oven (at 350 degrees) until dry (10-15 minutes). They need much less of this than normal dry food because it is denser, so be careful not to overfeed your dog.
Once you’ve tried these recipes a few times, you’re ready to start expanding your canine culinary skills. You can either create your own recipes, or just find more from someone else.
