Some people love the smaller breeds and just don’t have the room for a large breed dog. They might live in an apartment or condo and some land lords only allow dogs that are under a certain weight.
If you have limited space and want a smaller dog then you can look towards the toy breeds like the Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, West Highland Terrier, Morkie, Miniature Schnauzer and many similar breeds. These small and lovable dogs have little or no fear and will alert you to any intruders. They are too small to be effective guarding dogs, but they will certainly let you know if someone is outside in the yard or prowling around in the dark. I once saw a tiny Chihuahua chase two very large Doberman’s out of our yard. I’m not sure if the Doberman’s even saw our little Chihuahua but regardless they took off and didn’t come back.
When deciding the best breed for a watch dog you must consider the family they are to live with and the conditions they will be kept in. You can not buy a dog, tie it up, and then ignore it. All dogs need to be trained exercised and cared for. Good diet is vital and if you need your dog to live outside make sure it has adequate shelter and space to run. If you need to chain the dog at night then consider a running wire in the ground to attach the chain to, so the dog has some freedom of movement and can get in shelter when the weather is not good.
