How to Get My Chihuahua to Stop Growling and Trying to Bite My Visitors?

Ok, so my Chihuahua is almost 3 years old. When she was a puppy she was nice and not afraid of anyone. But lately every time we have a visitor at the house she growls, barks, and sometimes tries to bite. I have always had her around other people, so she has been socialized and has never been treated badly by a visitor. How do I get her to stop this behavior? (and hitting or spanking her is not an option)

Your dog has small dog syndrome.

This means when small dogs think of themselves as the leaders or pack and yap a lot and bite.

1. If your dog sleeps in the bed with you, this makes the dog feel better than the most as the Alpha sleeps in the best place so if your dog is sleeping on a pillow then big No No your dog should be on the feet side.

2. Teach your dog to walk at proper heel. Do not carry your dog , this makes the dog think there Alpha again.

3. Nothing in life is free. Have your dog work for food, rewards and especially affection , Alpha’s get affection all the time no matter if they had done something wrong.

4. Do not tolerate bad dog behavior because your dog is small. Consistently enforce all your commands.

How to be Alpha?

1. The number one way to communicate to a dog that you are his pack leader is to take him for a walk. Not the type of walk most humans take their dogs on but a pack walk, where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the human who is holding the lead. This is most important for all dogs, as in a dog’s mind, the leader always leads the way. A dog must not be allowed to sniff or eliminate anywhere he wishes, but where you allow him. One marking against a tree is enough for male dogs. The dog should be concentrating on following the human, not worrying about leading the way. This pack-type walk should be done daily. Not only will this release built-up energy, but it will satisfy the dog’s instinct to migrate which all dogs possess. Dogs that have excess energy bottled up inside them and that do not have their migration instinct met will develop various instability issues that most people mistake for being breed traits.

2. All humans must eat before the dogs, as the leader always eats first. When you give your dog its food eat a small snack first while he is watching, lay the snack near the dog’s food so that he thinks you are eating out of his bowl (the leader always eats first).

3. No table scraps should be fed to the dogs during a meal.

4. Feedings must be at a scheduled time. (No self-feeding dog food dispensers should be used, as this allows the dog to choose when he eats.)

say "NO!!!" and put it in a cage or outside everytime it’s barks and bites. Encourage it to love and be friendly. When it’s friendly give it a treat.

Shutting her in another room, or putting her in a cage. The older she gets, the more she doesn’t like someone invading her territory, and it’s the only option sometimes to keep her from being so nervous and biting someone. You will be doing all involved a favor, as the small dog will feel more secure in its own space until the visitors are gone.

First practice management. Keep pup away from strangers.

Then find a reputable, force free trainer to help you teach your dog how to feel better about strangers using counter conditioning and desensitization

i.e. stranger comes to door, dog gets a treat. Stranger leaves. Whenever stranger shows up, dog gets lots of treats. When stranger leave, treats stop. Practice this with a skilled trainer then practice with well known friends – with trainers guidance.

You will need to work with a trainer to avoid having your dog bite someone. You don’t want the dog to get confiscated.

Any type of punishment – yelling, scolding, spritzing, yanking, etc.. will just make the dog feel worse about strangers. Not better.

Your Chi just needs you to be more authoritative, She is running the show. I have two chi’s that I take to airports, and anyone can pet them. Get her out, socialize her more. She is getting overprotective which is a no no and will just get worse. Use clicker training on her. Get a friend to do a staged door knock, then entry. Make sure friend is willing to open and close the door a lot. LOL….Door knock, your dog barks, you correct, praise, treat. Over and over and over if needed. Have your friend hand her a treat when she welcomes her without barking or biting. This is a slow process. It’s very hard to break bad habits. AND…You never want to physically punish a chi when correcting. You also don’t want your chi caged when company comes. You want your chi to be part of the family. If you find you cant train her yourself …..have a trainer come in and help assess your situation and give you guidelines…..

Chihuahuas are very independent, clever, stubborn little dogs. At some point she has not had as many persons interacting with her. Dogs live in the moment. She needs continuous, constant, positive reinforcement. I am old and do not have new people that have time to spend with my dogs. Some days are better. Especially days that are nice enough to exercise them well. After three days of exceptional humidity, heat and poor interaction they were very irritable and barked more. They do respond to a canned air corrector. When they cease barking they get treats. They also do not bark if I am holding them. Shouting, or striking in any form is not an option. I try very hard to let them happily interact on a regular bases. Some of my friends are more friendly and want to interact with them. I am used to appologising for my little guys and continue to exersize and play with my dogs. It is not their fault, when I am interested in other things. Today I was able to get new toys and a nice bone that has helped. Dogs do not think about yesterday, only that they are apprehensive now. We spend most of our time with our dogs. Two helps to intertain and distract each other. When I hold my female, the male will go to his bed and feel secure. She gets your attention when she barks. Negitive attention is still attention. When some one knocks pick her up first. If she is in the way put her out of the way. The canned air Corrector is easily reccognised by the bright red can. My Chi’s both quit barking when they see it. They go off quietly, they get treats. I usually ask my visitor to place or drop the treat to them. It is a continous and constant endevor to have Chihuahuas. They really are not as invested in obedience as other dogs. They are stubborn and very independent. Some are more mellow than others.
