I have a 1 year and 5 month old chihuahua who had her first heat cycle, I believe, near the beginning of this year. (She would have been about 9-11 months old. A late bloomer.) As I recall, everything went "normal" as far as what was to be expected. I don’t know if she should have had another heat cycle though. I’ve heard some dogs have them only once a year. I realize it’s only been 6-8 months but I am just really careful with her. I know it should be expected anytime now or quite possibly not til next year depending on how she is. And I know I should have her fixed. I’ve been asking questions a/b my dog on here for months and months. Last September, we took her in to get spayed and she nearly died because of an unforseeable medical condition with her liver in which the anesthesia could not and still cannot be processed regularly. So that option is out. Our only hope is to keep a close eye on her as she grows up. So my question is still, should I be worried?
Yes, we are always VERY careful with her as there are some male dogs in the complex. We have notified the owners that she will have heat conditions, therefor it would be best to stay away at those times. We haven’t seen any of the regular signs yet with her (bleeding, swelling, constant cleaning) which is why I was a bit worried. I would think if something were wrong, she would have been acting differently but she’s perfectly normal.
Yeah, um, Dave? Try reading all the question first. We can’t have her spayed…
If you can’t get her spayed due to her medial condition….you will need to really know her heat cycle so you can watch her to avoid any mistake breeding’s. The usual time in between heat cycles is 6 mos…but every dog is different and she may come in heat at different times. I would just keep a close eye on her…check her frequently and watch her behavior. When females are in heat they will clean themselves frequently and you will usually see bright blood at first which will be your first sign.

Usually its every 6 months but every dog is different just be sure to keep an eye on her and watch for swelling and then bleeding I wouldn’t be worried though. I had this same question a short time ago, and I googled it. I believe the average time between heats are about 7 months. But, that can differ between breeds of dogs, I’m sure. There is so much information out there in la la google land, u would be amazed!!
