How are teacup chihuahua's different from regular chihuahuas?

I know that teacup chihuahua's are smaller and lighter than regular chihuahuas, but do they have the same temperment? And do tea cup chihuahua's have higher health risks (besides being more susceptable to fractures)? And anything else about them that would be helpful is appreciated :) I'd actually prefer to have a regular sized chihuahua than a so-called teacup chihuahua, I was just wondering what I need to knowjust in case I fell in love with a 'teacup chihuahua' and ended up getting one instead of an average sized chihuahua.

I would assume the only difference is that they are bred to be smaller than their counterpart, hence the name Tea cup. I'm sure they would have the same temperment as the larger Chihuahua however, due to the small breeding size might be prone to more health risks. Besides, whenever you start messing with the genetics of a breed there are always more health problems than with the original breed. The only healthy breed is a Mutt.

Teacup dogs are just a fancy name for a runt of the litter or two runts who are bred together to make more runts. Stay away from any dog called a teacup because they will be more likely to have health issues in life. Chihuahua's are small enough just get a normal one!!

There is no such thing as a "teacup" anything. It simply means runt of the litter and unscrupulous breeders will lure people in with the prospect of a "special" "small" dog. In reality they are far more likely to have health problems than dogs of a healthy size.

well, teacup chihuahuas are made out of porcelain you retard

They are the runts of the litters bred together. Yes they have more health problems.

Before paying a dime make sure it meets the akc standards!!

There is NO SUCH THING as a tea cup Chihuahuas!!!! Breed standards for Chihuahuas are 2 to 6 pounds. They are just a very small breed. If someone is advertising a teacup Chi then they are flat out lying to you and are probably selling the "runt" of the litter.

They're the result of breeding the runts of chi litters - they're the same but much MUCH more susceptible to health risks and everything, and no reputable breeder would breed a "teacup" chi. Sometimes they happen, but a reputable breeder will sell them with a spay/neuter contract. If the person is advertising these tiny dogs, RUN AWAY. Get thee to a good chihuahua breeder. There are many out there!

EDIT: AIDSmonkey, I laughed really hard. "Teacup chihuahuas are made of porcelain" makes my day.

temperament is based on how the dog is raised not by breed or size

teacups are usually made in china, you drink tea from them and they are extreemly popular in england…

in reality the term "Teacup" is simply a marketing ploy used by petstores, and bad breeders to charge ridiculous amounts for the runt of the litter…

this goes for chihuahuas, yorkies, poms, maltese ect…
there is no such thing as teacups…

within the breed, those sold as teacups generally end up being the same size as any other chihuahua (between 2-6lbs as the standard calls for) though many end up even bigger.
those "teacups" that stay very small are usually at a much higher risk for hypoglycemia, heart murmers, and water on the brain…being they are the runts of the litters AND from bad breeders.

chis on the smaller end of the scale from responsible breeders are generally just as healthy as the other pups…

i have a 3lbs male and a 5 1/2lbs female, both are just as healthy as eachother.

Teacups most breeds are just an expensive name for the runts who are generally unhealthy and do not live as long. Chihuahuas are supposed to weight about 1.5-2lbs so that is a normal weight, a Chi over 6lbs is an oversized and should never be bred. Size, Proportion, Substance
Weight - A well balanced little dog not to exceed 6 pounds. Proportion - The body is off-square; hence, slightly longer when measured from point of shoulder to point of buttocks, than height at the withers. Somewhat shorter bodies are preferred in males. Disqualification - Any dog over 6 pounds in weight. A well bred Chi can have a wonderful temperament and I knew a breeder in Mass who had many 1.5-4lb show dogs and all were outgoing and friendly. Obviously any tiny breed needs more care to not get hurt by bigger dogs or people stepping on it or falling off furniture. Also my vet sees more liver and other problems in tinies and always recommends a bloodtest be done be surgery. Some tiny Chihahuas are runts in a litter of larger pups and are bred by BYB, these have more health problems.

they are runt pups. Their parents were runts and tey are runts. They usually have more health problems, like most smaller dogs.

Tea cups are nothing but RUNTS that BACK YARD BREEDERS sell for lots of money by making people think that they are getting someting special.

Dogs bred taking only size into consideration tend to have more health problems than a dog that was bred taking everything into consideration.

A teacup chihuahua is the substitue name for the runt of the litter. Tecaup chihuahua is not a seperate breed it is a chihuahua it just has been born as a runt.

Yes, they have higher health risks due to the fact that they often times are the result of breeding small to smaller.
Responsible breeders only breed to the breed standard.

A "teacup" anything is just a made up, yes made up…there is no such thing as a teacup breed, name for a really small dog.

As others have said, there is no such thing as a "teacup chihuahua." There are larger chihuahuas and smaller chihuahuas.

If you are planning on getting a chihuahua, please consider saving a life and getting your pet from a shelter. If you are interested in a smaller chi, then visit several shelters and see the dogs in person to find the one that matches your desires.
